Nutritional Information for Chipotle

Chipotle's brand is built on 'Food with Integrity' — a commitment to responsibly sourced, minimally processed ingredients. Unlike most fast food chains, their ingredient lists are short and recognisable. We put the UK menu through NOVA classification to see if the brand promise survives scrutiny. The short answer: it largely does, but the tortillas and portion sizes are where the story gets complicated.

The UPF picture at Chipotle

Chipotle's ingredient lists are unusually clean for a fast food chain. The chicken contains chicken, rice bran oil, salt, and spices — scoring NOVA 2-3 depending on the marinade complexity. The barbacoa (slow-cooked beef) and carnitas (pork) are similarly clean. Even the sofritas (braised tofu) uses recognisable ingredients.

The flour tortilla is the main UPF marker on the menu — it contains wheat flour, vegetable shortening, and preservatives that push it to NOVA 4. The hard shell tacos (crispy corn) are cleaner at NOVA 3. Rice, beans, salsas, guacamole, and lettuce are all NOVA 1-2.

The challenge at Chipotle isn't processing — it's portion size. A fully loaded burrito with rice, beans, protein, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole can easily reach 900-1,000 kcal. The 'food with integrity' message is real at the ingredient level but irrelevant if you're consuming half your daily calories in one wrap.

Lower-UPF ordering guide

Best choices

For the lowest UPF exposure at Chipotle: order a bowl instead of a burrito to skip the processed flour tortilla. Choose brown rice over white (both are NOVA 1, but brown has more fibre). Stick to chicken or sofritas as your protein — both are cleanly prepared.

Load up on salsas (all NOVA 1) and guacamole (NOVA 1). The fajita vegetables are grilled with minimal processing. Skip the cheese and sour cream if you want to keep it fully plant-based and cleanest. A chicken bowl with brown rice, black beans, fresh tomato salsa, guacamole, and lettuce is one of the healthiest fast food meals available in the UK — around 550 kcal with clean ingredients throughout.
