Original Weetabix contains just nine ingredients: wholegrain wheat (95%), malted barley extract, sugar, salt, niacin, iron, riboflavin (B2), thiamin (B1), and folic acid. The wheat is the dominant ingredient by a wide margin, and the remaining items are either basic pantry ingredients (sugar, salt) or vitamin fortification required by UK law for breakfast cereals. There are no emulsifiers, no flavourings, no colours, and no preservatives. This is textbook NOVA 3 — a processed food made by combining a few recognisable ingredients.

The malted barley extract functions as a subtle sweetener and flavour enhancer. Under NOVA classification it is considered a processed culinary ingredient, not an ultra-processed additive. Sugar at 4.2g per 100g is low for a breakfast cereal — for context, most granolas sit at 15-25g per 100g.

Weetabix Protein is also NOVA 3 despite having 15 ingredients and 19g protein per 100g. It avoids UPF markers entirely.

The picture changes with flavoured variants. Weetabix Chocolate (NOVA 4) contains five UPF markers: lecithin, soya lecithin, emulsifier, flavouring, and flavourings. Sugar jumps to 17g per 100g — four times the original. Weetabix Banana (NOVA 4) adds flavourings and has 13g sugar. Crispy Minis Chocolate Chip and Fruit & Nut are also NOVA 4. The pattern is clear: any Weetabix variant with chocolate, fruit flavouring, or a crispy format crosses into ultra-processed territory.

Weetabix Crunchy Bran is an interesting middle ground — 15 ingredients and 14g sugar per 100g, but zero UPF markers, so it stays at NOVA 3.
