Is Porridge Ultra-Processed?

It depends — plain rolled oats are NOVA 1, but instant flavoured sachets and pots can be NOVA 3-4

It depends. Plain porridge oats — whether Quaker, Scott's, Tesco own-brand, or Nairn's gluten-free — are a single-ingredient product: 100% rolled oats. They score NOVA 1 (unprocessed or minimally processed) with zero UPF markers. Ready Brek is NOVA 2 because the oats are milled finer and fortified with added vitamins and minerals. However, flavoured instant products like Quaker Oat So Simple Golden Syrup pots contain added sugars, syrups, and flavourings that push them to NOVA 3-4. The key rule: if the ingredient list says just 'oats', it is not ultra-processed. If it lists golden syrup, flavourings, or sweeteners, it probably is.

Why Porridge scores It depends

Plain porridge oats are one of the simplest products in the supermarket. Every plain oat product we checked at Tesco — from the £1.35 Tesco Scottish Oats to the £2.95 Quaker Rolled Porridge Oats — contains exactly one ingredient: rolled oats. The oats are cleaned, steamed, and rolled flat. That is minimal processing by any definition, and it is exactly what NOVA 1 was designed to describe.

Scott's Porage Original is '100% Scott's Rolled Oats'. Quaker Rolled Porridge Oats is '100% Quaker Rolled Oats'. Quaker Jumbo Porridge Oats is the same. Nairn's Gluten Free Porridge Oats is '100% Gluten Free Wholegrain Oats'. There is no variation — no flavourings, no preservatives, no sweeteners.

Ready Brek sits in a different category. Its ingredients are Wholegrain Rolled Oats (60%), Wholegrain Oat Flour (38%), plus added Calcium, Niacin, Iron, Riboflavin (B2), Vitamin B6, Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, and Vitamin B12. The oats are milled to a finer texture and the product is fortified with vitamins and minerals. This makes it NOVA 2 (processed culinary ingredient) — not ultra-processed, but no longer a single unprocessed ingredient.

The real concern is flavoured instant porridge. Products like Quaker Oat So Simple Golden Syrup pots typically contain oats plus golden syrup, sugar, and flavourings. These additions push the product to NOVA 3 or even NOVA 4 depending on the specific additives. If you see 'flavourings' on the label, that is a UPF marker.

Tesco Easy Oats Original sachets sit somewhere in between — they are instant oats that may contain a small amount of salt, making them NOVA 1-2. The convenience format does not automatically mean ultra-processed, but always check the ingredients.

What to look for when shopping

Plain porridge oats are always NOVA 1. If the ingredient list says just 'oats' or '100% rolled oats', you are fine. Watch out for instant sachets and flavoured pots — check for added sugars, golden syrup, and 'flavourings', which are UPF markers. Ready Brek is fortified but not ultra-processed (NOVA 2). Budget tip: Tesco Scottish Oats at £1.35/kg is the cheapest option and just as clean as Quaker at £2.95/kg — both are 100% oats.
