Glucose risk

Pears have a low glycaemic index of approximately 38, which is among the lowest of common fruits. The key factor is their high fibre content — at 2.7g per 100g, pears contain more than double the fibre of bananas and significantly more than apples. This soluble fibre (particularly pectin) forms a gel during digestion that slows sugar absorption and produces a gradual, gentle blood glucose curve rather than a spike.

Processing level

NOVA 1 (unprocessed)

A fresh whole pear is a single-ingredient, unprocessed fruit. Every pear product we checked at Tesco — Conference, seasonal, organic — is NOVA 1. There are no additives, no preservatives, and no processing beyond picking, ripening, and packing.

What to watch for when shopping

Fresh whole pears are always NOVA 1. The processed pear products to be cautious about are canned pears in syrup (added sugar, NOVA 3), pear juice (fibre removed, sugar concentrated), and dried pears (concentrated sugar). If you are buying fresh, all Conference pears at Tesco have identical nutrition regardless of whether they are loose, in packs, or organic. Budget tip: Large Conference Pears Loose at 52p each is the cheapest option.
