Nutritional Information for Five Guys
Five Guys sells itself on 'no freezers, no microwaves, fresh ingredients' — which sets a higher bar than most fast food chains. We put their UK menu through NOVA classification to see if the brand promise holds up at ingredient level. The beef patties are genuinely cleaner than most competitors. But the buns, sauces, and especially the milkshakes tell a different story. Here's the honest breakdown.

The UPF picture at Five Guys
Five Guys' burger patties are the strongest part of their 'fresh' claim — the beef is hand-formed from fresh (never frozen) ground beef with no fillers or additives, scoring NOVA 1. That's genuinely unusual for a fast food chain. The hot dogs are a different story: processed meat with stabilisers and flavourings, scoring NOVA 4.
The burger buns are NOVA 4 — they contain emulsifiers, dough conditioners, and preservatives, as with most commercial bakery products. The bun alone contributes 238 kcal, 7.5g of fat, and 6.2g of sugar.
Fries are cooked in peanut oil (a cleaner choice than many competitors who use blended vegetable oils), but a Regular serving delivers 1,073 kcal — more calories than many people's entire lunch should contain. The milkshake base alone is 625 kcal and 69g of sugar before any mix-ins, making it one of the most calorie-dense items in UK fast food.
Lower-UPF ordering guide
For the lowest UPF exposure at Five Guys: the burger patty itself is genuinely clean (NOVA 1). A bunless burger ('bowl style') with lettuce wrap eliminates the processed bun entirely. Load up on fresh toppings — lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, jalapeños are all NOVA 1 and free of charge.
Fries are the hidden calorie trap: a Little Fries is 659 kcal, a Regular is 1,073 kcal. If you must have fries, the Little portion with Cajun seasoning is the most reasonable option. Skip milkshakes entirely — the base alone (625 kcal, 69g sugar) exceeds most desserts before you add any mix-ins. A Hamburger (single patty, no cheese) with all the free fresh toppings and a Little Fries is the most balanced Five Guys order at roughly 850 kcal total.
