Nutritional Information for Turkey Bacon
Turkey bacon is a processed meat product marketed as a lower-fat alternative to pork bacon, delivering around 116-204 kcal per 100g depending on the brand. From a SpikeSaver perspective, turkey bacon has zero glycaemic impact — there are virtually no carbohydrates. However, it is firmly NOVA 3 (processed) due to curing, smoking, added salt, and stabilisers like sodium tripolyphosphate. It offers high protein (16-24g per 100g) with significantly less fat than traditional pork bacon, but the high salt content (2.1-2.9g per 100g) is a concern.

Glucose impact
Very Low
Glucose risk
Turkey bacon contains virtually zero carbohydrates (0-2g per 100g) and negligible sugar. It has no measurable glycaemic index. From a blood sugar perspective alone, it is completely safe. However, the high salt content (2.1-2.9g per 100g — close to or exceeding the entire daily recommended maximum of 6g in just 200g) is a separate health consideration.
Processing level
Turkey bacon is a processed meat product (NOVA 3). It is made from turkey meat that has been cured, formed into rashers, and typically smoked. Ingredients commonly include stabilisers (sodium tripolyphosphate, diphosphate), added salt, and sometimes vegetable oil. Some brands push closer to NOVA 4 due to additional additives. Unlike plain turkey breast (NOVA 1), turkey bacon always involves significant processing.

What to watch for when shopping
All turkey bacon products at Tesco are NOVA 3 (processed) — there is no unprocessed turkey bacon option because the product is by definition cured and formed. The key variables are fat content and additives. Mattessons Turkey Rashers are the leanest option (1.6-2.1g fat per 100g, 116-117 kcal) while Najma products are significantly higher in fat (15-20g per 100g, 204-254 kcal) due to added vegetable oil. All products have very high salt content (2.1-2.9g per 100g). If you want unprocessed turkey protein, buy a plain turkey breast fillet instead.
