Is Protein Powder Ultra-Processed?
Yes — virtually all protein powder is NOVA 4 due to protein isolates, sweeteners, flavourings, and emulsifiers
Yes. Virtually every mainstream protein powder sold at Tesco — whether whey, casein, or plant-based — is ultra-processed (NOVA 4). The protein itself is an industrially extracted isolate or concentrate, and nearly all products add artificial sweeteners (sucralose, steviol glycosides), flavourings, emulsifiers (soy or sunflower lecithin), and thickeners (xanthan gum, guar gum, carrageenan). Even 'clean' brands like Myprotein and TRIBE hit NOVA 4. The only exception is single-ingredient protein powders like Naturya Organic Hemp Protein, which is just ground hemp seeds (NOVA 2) — but these are rare and most people find them unpalatable.
Why Protein Powder scores NOVA 4 — Ultra-processed
Protein powder is ultra-processed by design. The core ingredient — whey protein isolate or concentrate — is itself an industrial fraction extracted from milk through filtration, pasteurisation, and spray-drying. Under NOVA classification, any product built around an industrially extracted protein fraction is automatically NOVA 4, regardless of what else is in the formula.
But the additives seal it. Every mainstream protein powder we checked at Tesco contains at least two NOVA 4 markers on top of the protein isolate. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey contains soy lecithin (emulsifier), xanthan gum (thickener), sucralose (artificial sweetener), flavourings, and curcumin (colour) — five distinct UPF markers. Myprotein Impact Whey Isolate is the 'cleanest' mainstream option with just three ingredients (whey protein isolate, natural flavouring, sucralose), but flavouring and sucralose are both NOVA 4 markers.
ON Serious Mass is the most heavily processed product in this category. Its first ingredient is corn maltodextrin — a highly refined starch — followed by whey protein concentrate, creatine monohydrate, and a long tail of stabilisers including cellulose gum, guar gum, and carrageenan. It contains over 20 ingredients.
Plant-based options fare no better. TRIBE Protein Superblend uses pea protein and rice protein (both industrially extracted), plus MCT oil, inulin, acacia fibre, and steviol glycosides. It is marketed as 'natural' but every one of those ingredients is processed well beyond what NOVA considers minimal.
The sole exception we found is Naturya Organic Hemp Protein, which contains a single ingredient: ground hemp seeds. That is genuinely NOVA 2 (processed culinary ingredient). But it has a gritty texture, a strong earthy taste, and a lower protein percentage than isolate-based powders — which is why it remains a niche product.

What to look for when shopping
All mainstream protein powders are NOVA 4 — there is no way around it if you want a flavoured, sweetened product. If UPF status matters to you, look for single-ingredient powders like hemp protein powder or plain pea protein flour, which can be NOVA 2. Otherwise, just eat whole food protein sources (eggs, Greek yoghurt, chicken, lentils). The 'cleanest' mainstream option is Myprotein Impact Whey Isolate with only 3 ingredients (whey protein isolate, flavouring, sucralose), but it is still NOVA 4. Budget tip: Applied Nutrition Diet Protein at £13.00 for 450g is the cheapest option here and is no more processed than the £22 brands.
